This self-access class focuses on the different events that may provoke sexual grief and loss, including the impact that it has on Service Users. The training will review the several theories on grief therapy, and how therapists can integrate those theories in the context of Service Users sex lives and relationships. The class covers tools and important therapeutic conversations that can help Service Users. Silva will use case studies to illustrate the therapeutic processes.
Part 1: the different events provoking sexual grief and loss: explaining the various ways that Service Users can experience sexual grief and loss: death of a partner, separation, divorce, infidelity, childbirth, surgery, menopause/ ageing, trauma, as well as the missed opportunities.
Part 2: the review of several grief theories: covering theories from Kubler-Ross & Kessler, Julia Samuel, and Tonkin’s theory. This part will look at the existential and attachment aspects of grief.
Part 3: therapeutic tools to help clients through sexual grief and loss. This is cover first the “Do’s and Don’t’s of grief therapy. This section will demonstrate how to integrate grief therapy and the psychosexual therapy to help clients improve their sexual and mental health.
About the Trainer
Silva Neves is an award-winning, COSRT-accredited and UKCP-registered Psychosexual and Relationship Psychotherapist and a Trauma Psychotherapist. Silva is experienced in working with loss and grief, including sexual grief. Silva is a member of the editorial board for the leading international journal Sexual and Relationship Therapy.
Silva is the author of two books: Compulsive Sexual Behaviours, A Psycho-Sexual Treatment Guide for Clinicians (Routledge), Sexology: The Basics (Routledge), and he co-edited two textbooks with Dominic Davies: Erotically Queer (Routledge) and Relationally Queer (Routledge).
He also contributed chapters in various publications including: The Handbook of Social Justice in Psychological Therapies, Queering Gestalt Therapy, The SAGE Handbook of Counselling & Psychotherapy, Sexual Minorities and Mental Health: Current perspectives and New Directions. Silva wrote several articles in psychotherapy magazines and peer-reviewed journals, including New Psychotherapist, Therapy Today, Sexual and Relationship Therapy, The European Journal of Psychotherapy & Counselling, Attachment. He speaks internationally.
