Dr David Edwards MB BS MSc(Dist). Specialist in male and female Sexual Dysfunction
Having qualified in medicine at the London Hospital Medical College, David Edwards then worked in hospitals in Chelmsford, Cambridge and Bristol for several years and trained as a General Practitioner before accepting a GP partnership in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. Finding that there was a demand for vasectomies under local anaesthetic, he trained at the Elliot Smith Clinic, Churchill Hospital, Oxford so that he could regularly perform this operation in his surgery. Later when funding streams changed he (and two colleagues) set up the North Oxfordshire Vasectomy Group in order to successfully compete for NHS vasectomy contracts. As the GP surgery senior partner, he project led (together with building, financial, and architectural professionals) a £5.2 scheme in order to build a future proof health centre for Chipping Norton which opened in 2016. This embraces not just family medicine (and merging 2 GP surgeries) but also secondary care clinics and allied health care facilities.
He has a post-graduate degree in Medical Anthropology which has developed his interest in Sexual problems and Herbal Medicine and has included a discussion with HRH The Prince of Wales. Furthermore how different cultures seek help for their medical problems and how they are managed. At present he continues his interest as a Specialist in male and female Sexual Dysfunction and has undertaken clinics, research (on a wide range of medical conditions) advisory boards (both as a member and chair), lecturing (locally and internationally, on an individual basis or to over 1700 delegates) and writing (articles for the national press and book chapters).
Media work (mostly live presentations together with some pre-recorded) has included BBC1 (Panorama), Ch4 (Embarrassing Bodies) BBC3, BBC Radio 4 (Women’s Hour) and numerous local radio stations both in the UK and abroad.
He is past president (and now executive committee member) of the British Society of Sexual Medicine and has been on the scientific committee of several international sexual conferences including the South Asian Society for Sexual Medicine in 2017. He has served as a member on various NICE & MHRA committees, and a founder member of the Men’s Health Expert Policy Group which endeavours to bring men’s health issues to the notice of the Government. He is Vice-Chair & trustee for COSRT (College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists) and Chair of the Primary Care Testosterone Advisory Group (PCTAG).
For several years he has also undertaken voluntary training in Sub-Saharan Africa with his wife Jill. His expertise in sexual problems being a marker in Chronic Diseases is important as this region has a hugely increasing death rate in Diabetes and Cardiovascular disease.
