A Trauma-Sensitive Approach to Working Across Relationship Diversity

£15.00

This self-access class examines how cultural norms and developmental trauma shape relationship difficulties and explores how relationship diversity can open new possibilities for healing and growth.

CPD Hours: 1

Relationship difficulties are often best understood at the intersection of cultural expectations and developmental trauma. In this self-access class, Meg-John Barker explores how both cultural relationship norms and the absence of holding and hearing in early life can place unrealistic burdens on romantic relationships. This “cruel optimism” can lead to painful outcomes, including non-consensual dynamics, escalating conflict, and ruptures that are difficult to repair.

The session also considers the possibilities that relationship diversity offers in this context, highlighting how different relational styles can create space for more sustainable and consensual connections. Practitioners will gain insights into the implications of these dynamics when working with clients who present with diverse relational styles and trauma histories.

You will learn:

  • Cultural and developmental trauma: How cultural norms and early life experiences intersect in shaping relational challenges.
  • The impact of cruel optimism in relationships: Understanding how overburdening romantic relationships can lead to conflict and rupture.
  • The role of relationship diversity: Exploring how diverse relational styles can offer opportunities for healing and resilience.
  • Practice implications: Guidance for therapists working with clients with varied relational styles and trauma patterns.

This is a recording of Meg-John Barker’s presentation at the 2022 COSRT Conference; Gender, Sexual and Relationship Diversity in Modern Therapy.
