The self-access class offers a brief overview of the different theories of shame and focus on the ones that are the most up to date and relevant for psychosexual and relationship therapists. Silva Neves explains the function of shame, how it is often undetected by clients and therapists and how shame becomes uncontained. Silva will discuss how to recognise shame responses in clients, why it is relevant in sex therapy and some helpful interventions to help clients with their shame to resolve psychosexual and relational problems.

You will:

  1. Gain a good understanding of shame
  2. Learn how to detect and formulate the functions of shame in relation to psychosexual and relational difficulties
  3. Learn how to work with shame while helping clients resolve psychosexual and relational problems
  4. Have an opportunity to self-reflect on their own shame responses.

About the Trainer

Silva Neves

Silva Neves is a COSRT-accredited and UKCP-Registered Psychosexual and Relationship Psychotherapist, and a Trauma Psychotherapist. He is a Pink Therapy Clinical Associate. He sees clients presenting with a wide range of sex and relationship issues. Silva specialises in working with sexual trauma, compulsive sexual behaviours and works extensively with the LGBTQ+ communities.

Silva is a COSRT-accredited clinical supervisor. He is a Course Director for CICS (Contemporary Institute of Clinical Sexology). Silva is a member of the editorial board for the leading international journal Sex and Relationship Therapy.  Silva is the author of two books: Compulsive Sexual Behaviours, A Psycho-Sexual Treatment Guide for Clinicians (Routledge), Sexology: The Basics (Routledge), and he co-edited two textbooks with Dominic Davies: Erotically Queer (Routledge) and Relationally Queer (Routledge). Silva often makes contributions in the media on various sex and relationship topics, and he speaks internationally. He won the Sexual Freedom Ally Award in 2023.
